Satellite Gardens
These will be coming soon to your neighbourhood. These raised garden’s will be accessible to all and especially useful for people who do not have their own space to garden in. Satellite gardens will be supported by the Rangiora Community Garden and sponsored by local business, with the care and maintenance managed by a team of local enthusiasts. We see this as a great way to combat hidden hunger within our communities, to break social isolation and reduce food miles.
Community Max
This project has employed four young people (16 – 20 years) who are learning practical gardening skills and starting a NZQA approved horticultural qualification. This, ‘Work Ready’ training programme run by Leanne Liddell (our Garden Coordinator) from the garden has been possible with funding provided by Ministry of Social Development Community Max Scheme. This funding will be discontinued in mid-July.?
Our program provided a structure and a focus for the young people
to develop work ethic, developing a sense of ownership and responsibility
in the outcomes of the work focus, developing a sense of self, and
building confidence and esteem. As one young person describes when
talking about what Leanne and the garden has done for him –
‘I realise now that if I stand tall no one can look down on
me’.
